Ontario books rock the GGs

It's awards season in Canadian literary circles - a heady time of seemingly nonstop Facebook congratulation streams, and the occasional bitter aside from the unshortlisted.

Looking through my Ontario lens, I want to boast a little bit about yesterday's Governor General's Literary Awards shortlist announcement. All five of the fiction finalists, three of five poetry finalists and three of five non-fiction finalists are Ontario writers. In fact 17 of the 30 artists shortlisted across all the categories are from the province of Ontario, and 12 of the 30 publishers for those writers are independent Ontario-owned and -operated businesses.

You can find the full shortlist announcement at the Canada Council GG page.

Congratulations to Ontario's writers and publishers. You have created an outstanding literature.

Oh, and just FYI - shortlisted poet, David McGimpsey, was my guest in the Book Room last spring. We talked about his shortlisted book, L'il Bastard (Coach House Books).
