I did not know Derek well, beyond passing notice here and there at industry events, but recently had reason to do business and strike up a collegial friendship with him over the phone. As busy as he must have been running Canada's book industry magazine, Derek made room in his schedule to do even more work on behalf of writers and publishers. I am saddened I won't have the opportunity to know him better.
