Almost as soon I started to deal with the news that BookExpo was being cancelled, I started receiving notices about BookCampToronto.
With a similar design to other "camp" gatherings, such as the very successful CopyCamp copyright get-togethers, BookCampToronto is being organized as an unconference. It takes place June 6, 2009 at MaRS Centre (101 College Street, Toronto).
BCT will be an informal, cost-free gathering of book industry professionals and amateur bibliophiles. It is a Canadian offshoot of BookCamp in London, which seems to have generated great discussion. Topics already set for the one day event include:
What is a book?
Book as social object
How is anyone going to make money?
Mobile vs the Web
Gaming: the New Literary Frontier?
Can a literary culture survive without a critical culture?
And any registered participant is welcome to set their own session using the BookCampToronto wiki. I am registered and plan to attend.
